Aguilera’s tribute to Houston, a 22-time AMA winner, was announced in October. The performance was timed to mark the 25th anniversary of The Bodyguard. Speaking about her opportunity to celebrate the music icon at this year’s American Music Awards, Aguilera said in a statement, “I am honored and humbled to be asked to participate in such a special tribute of a timeless soundtrack that has been a huge inspiration not only in my own personal life and career, but to countless aspiring singers.” She added, “To be honoring the one and only, Whitney Houston, is a blessing and I am grateful to celebrate the spirit of her songs and legend that lives on.” Of course, “I Will Always Love You” was part of tonight’s special performance, which was introduced by Viola Davis.

As Gossip Cop reported, a Whitney Houston hologram duet with Aguilera was set to take place on the season finale of “The Voice” in 2016, but it was later canceled when low-quality footage of the hologram leaked online. The clip was met with a largely negative reaction from fans, who claimed that the hologram of Houston did not resemble the superstar. One day later, Aguilera released a statement expressing sadness over her canceled duet. She wrote, “Sadly the technology could not meet up to the talent that Whitney possessed, but I do know in time the performance the fans and I have been hoping for will come to life.”

Aguilera herself is a two-time AMA nominee. She was nominated for Favorite Female Pop/Rock Artist in 2001, but lost out to Faith Hill. The star was also nominated for International Artist of the Year in 2003. To this date, Houston remains the AMAs’ most awarded female vocalist of all time.
